Ingress: Join The Resistance!

What is Ingress you say?

Ingress is a free mobile game (Android and IOS). Ingress can best be described as a layer over google maps which looks like this.

IngressScreenie

On this Map there are ‘Portals’ marked by works of art, historic buildings or landmarks and pretty much anything that has a high volume of people traffic such as train stations, venues, post offices and things of that nature.

There are 2 factions. Blue is the Resistance (Yay) and Green is the Enlightened (booooo).
The storyline of Ingress from the creators themselves is as follows:

Ingress transforms the real world into the landscape for a global game of mystery, intrigue, and competition.
Our future is at stake. You must choose a side.
A mysterious energy has been unearthed by a team of scientists in Europe. The origin and purpose of this force is unknown, but some researchers believe it is influencing the way we think. We must control it or it will control us.
“The Enlightened” seek to embrace the power that this energy may bestow upon us. “The Resistance” struggle to defend, and protect what’s left of our humanity.

Install Ingress and transform your world.

The World is the Game
Move through the real world using your Android device and the Ingress app to discover and tap sources of this mysterious energy. Acquire objects to aid in your quest, deploy tech to capture territory, and ally with other players to advance the cause of the Enlightened or the Resistance.”

What it boils down to is that Resistance (Blue) are the good guys and Enlightened (Green) are like the bad Government/Cult trying to take over the world.

Benefits of playing Ingress

  • I hate exercise. I avoid it. Ingress is a game where you have to literally go outside, walk up to these portals and take them over. Since playing ingress my exercise has increased by a butt ton from walking. If the weather is good I could spend most of the day out and about walking around.
  • Discover things about where you live. You would be surprised at how much you take for granted and neglect to see where you live. Since playing Ingress I have seen many interesting sculptures and buildings that I never noticed before.
  • Making friends, I have met some good new people playing this game. Sometimes it’s good to vary your friend circles to maximise your contacts with similar interests.
  • Bragging rights. Why does anyone do anything? In this case being in control of an area means you get to brag to the other team that you are winning 🙂

Costs of Ingress

Ingress has few downsides:

  • It’s addictive. You may find yourself out in the rain playing.
  • Minor paranoia. Meeting opposing players is inevitable, sometimes you will get portals attacked you are next to and will be looking around to see who is on their phones. Even walking about in general you will find yourself rubbernecking to see if people on their phones are ingress players.
  • The game needs data and GPS on so the data usage can be high.
Data usage can be 500mb to 2GB monthly depending on your dedication to playing
  • The app can be power hungry, I have a Samsung S4 and the battery drains within 2 – 3 hours. A lot of dedicated players counteract this by getting a pocket sized rechargeable battery pack (See Here) so they can be out longer, these devices are also great for general long days out. Some players drive around and plug into their cars.

  1. Actually both factions came from cults. If I heard correctly that the two were anti Magnus and 13magnus, but that’s just what I heard.
Also, the Enlightened aren’t evil, it’s just that there is some heavy bias against them seeing as the other faction is called “the resistance”. I think it’s kinda neutral. It goes a lot further in depth past the naming.

    • To be honest I try to avoid all storyline stuff as it is somewhat not my cup of tea. Blue/Green. Either you have pals who play on a certain side or you pick your preferred colour 🙂
